Ballistic / Kevlar Helmets OVERVIEW Page

Kevlar Helmets offer good ballistic protection from Fragmentation and most pistol caliber threats which is why you see most military and SWAT teams in helmets. An even more common reason for helmets is blunt trauma protection from impact with walls, vehicles, clubs, fists, etc., etc.

But please be aware that your head is much more susceptible to blunt trauma than your body. ANY impact of a bullet on a helmet WILL CAUSE INJURY AND CAN CAUSE DEATH. You put the odds more in your favor with head protection, but (as with ANY armor) no guarantee of invulnerability can be made. Of course blunt trauma is usually preferable to the alternative!

IMPORTANT: Blunt Trauma Protection

All our helmet models featured include the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) Blunt Trauma Protection Pad System - 0.5" - 0.75" - 1.0" thick pads of engineered impact protection to cushion your skull from impact.

Many other helmets look the same on the outside, but have the older generation nylon / leather / open cell foam interior suspension - NOT up to modern standards. If it says "universal fit", "comfort fit" or "standard fit", or anything other than ACH blunt trauma protection pads, you are missing critical protection for your brain.

These older systems can be fine on comfort, but offer MUCH less blunt trauma protection on impact. If your helmet is of this type, we strongly recommend that at the very least you upgrade your helmet with a Foam Impact Liner to bring blunt trauma protection closer to the latest mil-spec. Really the best solution is to retrofit the ACH blunt trauma pad system.

Note: When comparing weights please be aware that we quote ACTUAL weights for a normal male size Medium, ready to wear. We do NOT play the "weight loss" games you may encounter elsewhere, such as quoting the weight of an unrealistic Small size. Ask to have the helmet you are going to buy weighed ready to wear - in your size.

Helmet Sizing

Measure the circumference around your forehead with a cloth tape measure
(or a belt and a ruler).

Be sure to measure:

  • SNUGLY - pull that tape measure snug !
  • above the eyebrow ridge
  • head up straight, and
  • keep the tape measure horizontal, i.e., roughly parallel to the ground
  • take the widest forehead circumference measurement you get when the tape is SNUG.
  • it helps to look in the mirror to check your measuring
SIZING NOTE:

When you first try it on, helmet with blunt trauma pads will probably feel tight if the pads are cold.  See the instruction booklet for pad placement ideas, and try on with different pad setups (everyones' head is different). Then wear it for a few hours to let the pads warm up and conform to your head.
